Kind and brave: Focus on positive relationships at Sanderson Alliance

Hundreds of children and adults from across the Sanderson area and beyond participated over the weekend in the Inaugural Sanderson Alliance Art Awards, supported by the Sanderson Neighbourhood Activity Centre and Darwin Community Arts.

pic 1A total of 181 student entries where chosen from the hundreds of works created by students at Manunda, Karama, Malak, Wulagi, Anula and Sanderson schools.

Much of the artwork was produced in social and emotion learning lessons. It’s powerful to know that each piece is the result of a child or adult reflecting on positive relationships in their lives. Many works depict respect, care and love between friends and siblings; parents and children; between parents, partners and people of different cultures.

The huge job of awarding the cash prizes was generously taken up by local artist Winsome Jobling and many thanks to Aaliyah Kopp for the Acknowledgement of Country.

The opening ceremony was attended by key people supportive of our initiative, including: Member for Wanguri Nicole Manison; new Member for Sanderson Kate Worden; Caitlin Perry of the Darwin Community Legal Service; Smith Family Program Coordinator Jacinta Chartres; Ken Davies and other Department of Education Executives. All participating school principals attended including Paul Matthews of Casuarina Senior College.
